Mark your calendars: It's almost time to start digging!

The Alliance for Downtown New York will present Adopt A Geranium Day between 10 AM and noon on Wednesday, October 13 in Bowling Green, the city's oldest park. The event will give people who work, live or visit a chance to dig up--and keep--a geranium.

Adopt A Geranium Day is part of the Downtown Alliance's Going Green initiative, which is dedicated to building an environmentally sustainable Lower Manhattan. It is made possible with support from the Office of Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, Community Board 1 and Crumbs Bake Shop.

In all, more than 4,000 geraniums will be removed from Bowling Green--in anticipation of the Downtown Alliance's Fall Community Planting Day. We could use volunteers to help plant tulips from 10 AM to noon on Saturday, October 23. For those who would rather observe than dig, expert horticulturalists from Nielson Elefante Nurseries will be on hand to pot geraniums that can be taken back to homes and offices.

Please RSVP to contactus@downtownny.com.

Gro-pots, tote bags and tools for digging will be available.
