SCHUMER ANNOUNCES DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE APPROPRIATIONS BILL INCLUDES $2 MILLION FOR BATTLEFIELD COMMUNICATIONS PROJECT THROUGH U ALBANY'S COLLEGE OF NANOSCALE SCIENCE And ENGINEERING
Funding To Be Used to Help Soldiers Communicate More Quickly on the Battlefield
University of Albany Will Partner with Vistec Lithography, Hypres to Develop Technology
Yesterday, U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer announced that the Department of Defense appropriations bill includes $2 million for the University of Albany's College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) in a partnership with Vistec Lithography and Hypres Inc. to expand and improve the communications systems that American soldiers use on the battlefield.
"Every day our brave women and men put their lives on the line for our country and we owe them the best equipment possible," Schumer said. "This project at U Albany will bring current military communications to the next level and will bolster the region's reputation as a center of advanced technological development, laying the groundwork for further hi-tech job growth."
CNSE, Vistec Lithography and Hypres Inc. will use the funding to improve the communications systems that soldiers use on the battlefield. Specifically, the project will develop an advanced digital superconductor prototype with the goal of achieving a tenfold increase in communications performance while cutting in half the energy consumption that the current systems use.
Yesterday, the appropriations bill for the Department of Defense passed the Defense subcommittee. The legislation will be voted on by the full committee before heading to the floor for a full vote before the Senate. The bill will then proceed to the House-Senate Conference Committee, before final passage in both chambers, and sent to the President to become law.
