Dear Lucas,
We have two exciting victories to share with you!
First, Bill's campaign to reign in Citizens United corporate spending gained momentum earlier this week, when elected officials from states and cities across the country joined forces to launch the Coalition for Accountability in Corporate Spending (CAPS).
The CAPS objective is to build on the tools Bill has utilized in New York City to change corporate policies regarding Citizens United spending, and pass legislation at the local, state and federal level to disclose and limit the unrestricted political spending flooding our elections.
To date, the members of the coalition are:
Bill de Blasio, Public Advocate, New York City
Pat Quinn, Governor, Illinois
Tom DiNapoli, State Comptroller, New York
Wendy Greuel, City Controller, Los Angeles
Rob McCord, State Treasurer, Pennsylvania
Janet Cowell, State Treasurer, North Carolina
And that's just the start--the Citizens United case has clearly been resonating with leaders across the country, and we expect to add several more names to this list in the coming weeks. Visit the CAPS website at www.saveourelections.com to learn more about our new allies and the campaign.
Meanwhile, as our students return to school, Bill has led the fight to give those with the most at stake -- students, parents and school staff -- more say in what happens in decisions affecting education.
Spurred on by Bill's advocacy, the Department of Education announced new reforms that will make these transitions much more transparent, and will give parents a seat at the table for decisions involving their children
These new policies were recommended by Bill and the Alliance for Quality Education (AQE) this July following a comprehensive report , which included a survey of over eight hundred parents grappling with schools closing or moving into already occupied buildings.
None of this would be possible without your continued support. As always, we thank you on behalf of Bill de Blasio, and all the many New Yorkers who are being positively impacted by his work.
