Creating a Healthier Society by Building a Foundation of Healthy Child Development
Health in the earliest years lays the groundwork for a lifetime of well-being, according to a new report from the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University and funded, in part, by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The Foundations of Lifelong Health Are Built in Early Childhood proposes a new framework for improving physical and mental health, and states that significant progress in lifelong health promotion and disease prevention could be achieved by reducing hardships (or stressors) experienced by young children. Progress could be accelerated through enhancements based in science to such policy areas as:
- Child care and early education;
- Child welfare;
- Public assistance and employment programs;
- Housing; and
- Community development initiatives.
