Is there a way to prevent Alzheimer's?

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I'm Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

An expert panel has looked over the research so far on whether people can prevent Alzheimer's disease by keeping mentally and physically active, and using various dietary supplements. And the panel has concluded there's no good evidence that they work.

The panel was convened by the National Institutes of Health. The NIH's Dr. Neil Buckholtz:

``The current treatments provide some symptomatic benefit for a small period of time - maybe a couple of years. But there are no treatments that are currently available that will delay the progression of the disease.'' (13 seconds)

Buckholtz says more research is needed to find a way to prevent Alzheimer's. There is no cure. It's estimated that up to 5 million people in the United States have Alzheimer's.
