IN MEMORIAM: ROBERT V. TISHMAN

REBNY_logo_nyreblog_com_.gifDear Member:

We deeply regret to inform you of the passing of one of New York's most respected real estate developers and philanthropists, Robert V. Tishman, at the age of 94. Bob was a member of REBNY for 52 years, serving as Governor from 1966-1979 and as Chairman from 1973-1975.

Before co-founding Tishman Speyer in 1978, Bob served as President and CEO of Tishman Realty & Construction Co., which was founded by his grandfather, Julius Tishman in 1898.

Bob was a leading advocate in our industry to adopt greater transparency for its practices and transactions and was among the first to incorporate high-speed elevators in Manhattan office buildings. One of the city's first cogeneration power facilities was developed by Bob at 11 west 42nd street.

As past Chairman, and then as Honorary Chairman of Montefiore Medical Center, Bob funded numerous technological advancements, including the hospital's first fully integrated computer network. He established the Phyllis and Robert Tishman Family Fund, which has provided grants for technology in secondary schools and Cornell University. He also served as an Associate Chairman and Charter Trustee of the Jewish Association for Services for the Aged and a member of the Board of Directors of Boys Harbor, Inc.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Bob's daughters Lynne Handler and Nancy Gonchar, his grandson, REBNY Governor and Executive Committee member Robert Speyer, his colleagues at Tishman Speyer, and the entire Tishman family.
