ENDING "SOCKS AND SAUSAGES"

garodnick_city_council_header_nyrebllog_com_.gifPutting the Neighborhood Back in Neighborhood Street Fairs

Street fairs today are all too often generic "socks and sausages" productions, many of them precisely the same, no matter where in the city they pop up.  They cost the City $2.4 million in police overtime and cause traffic to be re-routed -- and, besides giving pedestrians the freedom to take over the street, what do they offer?

I believe street fairs can be welcome events in our neighborhoods if we take them back to their roots as true community events.  I am drafting a series of bills to help achieve this -- you can read about my plan in the Daily News , and more about my reasoning behind it in an op-ed that I published today on the Huffington Post .

Sincerely,
