Wednesday, November 10 - 6:00 PM

In the ever evolving world of collateral consequences that follow criminal convictions, changes come both large and small. Over the summer, the New York State legislature passed a law to streamline the procedures for individuals convicted in federal courts who wish to obtain a Certificate of Relief from Civil Disabilities. Additionally, in March, the U.S. Supreme Court issued the landmark decision, Padillo v. Kentucky , 130 S Ct 1473, which sent shock waves through criminal courthouses everywhere by finding that criminal defendants must be accurately advised of the probable/possible deportation consequences of guilty pleas. Forum panelists will discuss these changes through the lenses of both practitioners and judges in an attempt to determine how these decisions will affect what goes on in the courtroom.
