WILL WE EMERGE STRONGER IN 2012?

nadler1.jpgDear Friend,

Thank you for all of your support for Democrats in the recent election.  Although the House of Representatives suffered major losses, I am looking forward to working with our new Governor Cuomo, Lt. Governor Duffy, Comptroller DiNapoli, and Attorney General Schneiderman.  We can be proud of these victories in New York.

While the loss of the House can feel extremely dispiriting, I believe it clearly reflects our stark economic reality and not a fatal loss of faith in the Democratic Party or our President.  As I have been saying for two years, you cannot turn an aircraft carrier around in a single block.  The disastrous economic reality that the Obama Administration inherited has been incrementally improving, but obviously not quickly enough for frustrated voters.  While in the minority, we Democrats, who will comprise a more ideologically progressive caucus than the current cohort, will continue to fight for the programs and policies which will extricate our nation from the recession and provide the jobs, security and rights that Americans are seeking.

As Americans continue to lose their jobs and their homes in the coming months, I will keep fighting tirelessly to extend unemployment insurance benefits, end the foreclosure crisis, protect health insurance reform, save Social Security and Medicare from privatization and cuts, reinvest in our transportation and infrastructure, and preserve our civil rights and civil liberties.  I will continue to expose Republican hypocrisy on issues like the deficit and debt reduction, while the GOP members continue to support tax cuts for millionaires and two enormously costly and unnecessary wars.

Ultimately, I predict that the Democrats will emerge even stronger in 2012 and unify around our core progressive principles.

Thank you again for your votes; and I am especially grateful to all of you who made campaign contributions, phone banked, knocked on doors, and talked to your friends, family and neighbors about the stakes in this election.  My reelection, and the elections of so many of my colleagues, would not be possible without your hard work and participation in our democracy.

Gratefully,

Jerrold Nadler
