THEY GOTTA BE LUNATICS!

martymark.jpgBOROUGH PRESIDENT MARTY MARKOWITZ AND COUNCILMEMBER DOMENIC RECCHIA FINALLY ADMIT..."WE'RE LUNATICS!"

25 DAYS FROM GRAND OPENING, LUNA PARK LAUNCHES MARKETING CAMPAIGN; ASKS THE REST OF THE WORLD, "ARE YOU LUNATICS?"

Yesterday, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz finally admitted at a press conference at Brooklyn's Borough Hall that he is a LUNAtic - and proud of it!  The announcement kicked off a marketing campaign promoting "LUNAtic Awareness," in anticipation of the Grand Opening of the new Luna Park at Coney Island on Saturday, May 29, 2010.

"It's no secret that I'm bonkers for Brooklyn and cuckoo for Coney Island," said Borough President Markowitz. "And when it comes to Luna Park, I'm an absolute LUNAtic. But you know who the real crazies are? People who think they won't have an insanely good time this summer at America's Playground, Coney Island.  Coney has always been the ultimate destination for affordable family fun, and now Luna Park will join icons like the Cyclone and Deno's Wonder Wheel to make it the most unforgettable summer in years!"

City Councilman Domenic M. Recchia, Jr. also admitted this morning to being a LUNAtic. He was represented by chief of staff Karen Becker.

"Boys and girls from far and wide are going to go crazy for the new Luna Park," said Councilman Recchia.  "We're bringing thrills, chills and spills to Coney Island with state-of-the-art rides that will be staffed by people from the community - bringing us into the next century without forgetting the roots that make this neighborhood so vibrant and exciting.  If there's one place you absolutely have to visit this summer, it's Luna Park at Coney Island."

Lynn Kelly, President of the Coney Island Development Corporation (CIDC), and Valerio Ferrari of Central Amusement International (CAI) joined the effort, asking the world, "Are you LUNAtics?"

At the press conference, Borough President Markowitz unveiled Luna Park's official logo, as well as a sample of the graphics that will appear on merchandise, on billboards, in newspapers, and on subway cars and platforms, in order to rally LUNAtics throughout the region.

"Millions of people, here in Brooklyn and around the world, are crazy about Coney Island," said Valerio Ferrari, president of CAI, which is developing and operating Luna Park.  "These are the LUNAtics, and come May 29th, we open our gates to them. So now, we ask you: Are you a LUNAtic?"

"Today marks another milestone along the road to revitalization in Coney Island," said CIDC President Lynn Kelly. "LUNAtics the world over will soon descend on Coney Island to experience everything that the new Luna Park has to offer."

LUNAtics are encouraged to join Luna Park's support group at facebook.com/lunaparknyc and publicly declare their LUNAcy on Twitter (twitter.com/lunaparkconeyis) using the hashtag #imalunatic.

About Luna Park

Opening Memorial Day weekend 2010 and named after an iconic piece of Coney's history, the new Luna Park (www.lunaparknyc.com) represents the largest investment in amusements in Coney Island in decades.  The park's inaugural season will introduce New Yorkers and tourists from around the world to 19 new rides, including the world debut of "Air Race." The new Luna Park has been designed to reflect the spirit and personality of today's Coney Island, while capturing the original look and feel of its namesake.  With no entrance fee, Luna Park will be fully accessible to those who prefer games to rides, or to those simply taking a stroll down the Boardwalk.
