Yesterrday, Governor David A. Paterson, Senate Majority Conference Leader John Sampson, Senate Energy Chair George Maziarz and Senate Energy Vice Chair Darrel Aubertine announced that they have reached an agreement to create a permanent Power for Jobs program that will be called Energize New York. "We are one step closer to achieving a permanent solution to the Power for Jobs conundrum," Governor Paterson said. "When the Assembly passes this legislation, this program will energize New York's economy at a time when we need it the most. The days of passing one year extenders of broken programs are over. As demonstrated by the Senate's leadership on this issue, real reform is possible and I encourage the Assembly to join with us in passing this historic legislation." Senator Darrel J. Aubertine said: "For more than a decade, Power for Jobs has successfully preserved jobs here in New York State, but to reach its full potential of creating new jobs we need to expand the resources available and end its dependence on the Legislature for renewal. This bipartisan agreement reached with Governor Paterson achieves our goal of creating a permanent new program that gives employers the certainty they need to make long term investments, provides new power for attracting new businesses, and extends benefits to farmers. It is critically important for more than a quarter of a million New Yorkers dependent on jobs supported by this now expired program that the Assembly joins us in this bipartisan legislation immediately." Senator George D. Maziarz said: "We have been stalled at a crossroads with our low-cost energy and economic development programs, and today we are finally moving forward in the right direction. The new Energize New York program will provide more cheap energy to job-creating businesses than ever before. In doing so, we are making sure that a special emphasis is placed on Upstate New York businesses and ratepayers. For the sake of our economy, this permanent, bipartisan initiative should be here to stay, and I look forward to helping it move through the Senate." Senate Majority Conference Leader John L. Sampson said: "More power means more jobs for New Yorkers. Expanding job creation and economic development resources by lowering energy costs attracts the businesses we need to move our economy forward. I commend Governor Paterson, and Senators Aubertine and Maziarz for working toward a bipartisan solution to get New Yorkers working again." The agreement includes:
