THE RIGHT WINGERS ARE AT IT AGAIN!

email-header_emily_nyreblog_com_.gifDear Lucas,

It's hard to believe how quickly the right wing's attacks are coming now, but they know what's at stake in this next election -- and so do we.

I've been receiving reports from the field this week I wanted to make sure you knew about -- the latest special interest attacks, GOP power grabs, and thankfully, some great updates on our women candidates in critical races.

If we're going to be ready to help our candidates respond to attacks and win this November, we have to know what we're facing. So let's get right to it -- here's the latest news from the field.

Warmly,
Britt Cocanour

P.S. With a major EMILY's List milestone on the horizon, I also wanted to make sure you knew about our plans to commemorate our 25th anniversary next month. I hope you can join us -- in person or online -- as we celebrate changing the face of power!

Corporate Special Interests On The Move

The conservative and well-funded Chamber of Commerce is leading a coalition of organizations in launching a multimillion dollar ad campaign to kill health care reform. Spending as much as a million dollars a day, the Chamber is running ads in 17 states -- hitting Democrats around the country. Another right-wing special interest group is adding to the calls against health care reform, running a seven-state radio campaign against Democrats, including Cong. Dina Titus (NV-03), whom we helped elect in 2008.

The GOP has ratcheted up their efforts to defeat reform, launching radio, web, and robocall attacks as part of their "Code Red" program targeting candidates in tough races who are likely supporters of health care reform. EMILY's List freshman Cong. Mary Jo Kilroy (OH-15) has already been the target of one such attack.

Positioned To Win

Recent polling in the Vermont gubernatorial race shows Secretary of State Deb Markowitz is the candidate best positioned to beat the GOP's nominee, Lieutenant Governor Brian Dubie this fall. Dubie, who's running unopposed on the Republican ticket, is ultraconservative, and his far-right stances don't line up with the state's progressive-leaning voters. Deb is exactly the pro-choice Democratic woman this state needs, but the GOP has held this seat for four elections -- and they won't give it up without a fight.

Blunt Named To "Dirty Dozen"

The GOP's frontrunner in the Missouri Senate race, Cong. Roy Blunt, was named to the League of Conservation Voters' "Dirty Dozen" list just last week. Running against EMILY's List candidate Secretary of State Robin Carnahan, Blunt has supported Big Oil and opposed conservation efforts during his time in Congress, leading to his inclusion on the list. Blunt's response to the news from LCV? He was "honored."

Leader Of The Pack

In Minnesota, Speaker of the House Margaret Anderson Kelliher announced she's leading the field in support for the DFL endorsement for governor! Margaret is running a strong campaign to become the state's first woman governor -- but she still has a long road ahead and a battle against the GOP, who are determined not to lose this seat.
