"From my first day in office, rebuilding the World Trade Center site has been at the top of my list of priorities. In the ensuing months and years, we have faced many challenges, and at times it seemed as if our goals were too distant to firmly grasp. But today, even in the midst of the worst economic climate of our lifetime, we have found a way to continue rebuilding. Today, we have found a way to protect the public interest and give the private sector a pathway to success. Today, we have reached an agreement to begin the final phase of World Trade Center development. "Since the arbitrator's decision last January, I've worked with Mayor Bloomberg and Assembly Speaker Silver to bring the Port Authority and Silverstein Properties to an agreement that benefits Lower Manhattan, the City, State and country. This development plan will do just that, striking the critical balance between the public and private sectors that I have called for throughout these negotiations. "My staff and I extend our congratulations and thanks to our partners in negotiation: Governor Christie, Mayor Bloomberg and his staff, Speaker Silver, Larry Silverstein, and Port Authority Executive Director Chris Ward and Chairman Anthony Coscia. The way forward is not through legal means, but cooperation, commitment and dedication to continuing progress on the World Trade Center site." |
