Almost two months after the oil began to spill, at least a dozen people are reportedly sick from the toxic soup of oil and chemical dispersants used in clean-up efforts.
To this day, countless worker and residents in the Gulf Region are being exposed to these toxic conditions, and the continuing threats posed to human and marine life are unacceptable.
At a recent House Judiciary hearing, I pushed BP to admit its liability for the cost of cleaning up the oil spill, but BP would not take responsibility for paying for the health of the workers who are cleaning up its mess. Watch video of hearing here: http://www.youtube.com/user/JerryNadler , and sign my petition demanding BP protect workers and residents in the Gulf here: http://www.jerrynadler.com/bp .
Amidst the horrifying news of this environmental and economic disaster, we must ensure that we do not repeat the federal government's mistakes in addressing the toxic environmental conditions after the attacks of September 11, 2001. If the responders and community members near the World Trade Center site had been warned and protected by the EPA and the Bush administration in the first place, we would have prevented thousands from becoming sick unnecessarily. Let's not allow the same systemic failure that happened in the dark days after September 11 to happen again to the residents and relief workers in the Gulf Region today.
Sign the petition to demand that BP take responsibility and do whatever it takes to protect the people cleaning up ITS mess. Tell President Barack Obama, EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis that they must enforce ALL safety laws during the cleanup in order to prevent a repeat of the public health crisis that occurred in NYC post-9/11. Providing respirators, testing the air, and following other life-saving procedures cannot be optional. Click here to add your name: http://www.jerrynadler.com/bp.
