Statement of Support for Representative Mike McMahon

It's no secret that Rep. Mike McMahon and I do not see eye to eye on many issues.  In both style and substance we approach politics and policy from different angles.  Having been Democratic  primary rivals in the past it would be all too easy, and all too human, to keep our swords at the ready, against each other, while losing sight of what is important to the people of our district.  But, that would be wrong.  Instead, our obligation is to rise above the fray and work together, as best we can, for the sake of our nation, our district, our party and our ideals.

To me, one key to the concrete implementation of progressive ideals, for which I have long fought, is the election of Democrats.  So I see that as a priority.  Our differences notwithstanding, Mike McMahon will be the Democratic candidate in November, so I support his re-election.

Recently, at his invitation, we spoke at length in an effort to find common ground for the benefit of our people and our party. We share many areas of agreement.  Of particular note are the Congressman's leadership on Veteran's issues and his opposition to shale fracting in upstate New York.

Mike also agreed that he should, and will, pay more attention to progressive views and take steps to reduce any tensions that may exist between him and the progressive community.  To that end he voiced his continued support for Council Member Rose and his commitment to her success in office.

But what struck me most about the meeting was that it happened at all.  For twenty-eight years, before Mike's election, too many had been shut-out from Congressional input under Republican incumbents. Progressive Democrats, working people, immigrants, African-Americans, peace activists, environmentalists - the list goes on and on - have all been denied seats at the Congressional table.   Our last Congressman did not even pay lip service to these constituents.   I was there, for example, when he had constituents arrested rather than simply listen to their legitimate concerns on Iraq.

Now the door is open.  Mike may not agree with us on everything but at least we have the opportunity to plead our case and sometimes change his mind.  The fact that we have a Democratic Congressman who listens is critical.  The Republicans won't listen to progressive ideas.

So I am carrying petitions for Mike McMahon.  After the primary I will support the Democratic slate, including Mike.  I'll vote for Mike.  And I ask all Democrats to come together and do the same.

I have no illusion that, after November, Mike will have a progressive epiphany.  To the contrary, progressives will have to work hard to convince him of the sanity and logic of their positions.  And I'll be there every step of the way.  Count on it.

But remember this.  With Mike we have a partner.  With the Republicans we will have an adversary.  So, I like Mike Mc.
