ENOUGH TO MAKE SMALL BUSINESSES SICK?

Dear REBNY Member,

Last March, the City Council introduced legislation that would require all employers to provide Paid Sick Leave. The draft bill would allow employees to accrue 1 hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked. Small businesses (defined as 20 employees or less) would be required to provide up to 40 hours per employee per year, and all other business employees would receive up to 72 hours per year. The Council is expected to vote on this legislation in the fall.

REBNY is working with the Partnership for New York City on a survey of the city's employers and paid sick leave policies to inform the City Council on their pending legislation. The purpose of the survey is to provide the Council with an accurate picture of both current employer practices and the potential costs of the proposed sick leave mandate. We are asking New York City private and non-profit employers, both small and large, to complete this easy online survey. Responses will be kept confidential. A good sampling of employers in all industries is critical to informing the City Council on legislation that could have a significant impact on business. The bill as introduced is attached. (Link appears below.) This issue is important to the New York City business climate, regardless of whether the proposed legislation directly affects your business, so please take some time to complete the survey by August 12, 2010.
