Dear Supporter:
City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer, whose District is home to many cultural institutions -- both large and small -- was named Chair of the Cultural Affairs, Libraries and International Intergroup Relations Committee.
The Committee on Cultural Affairs, Libraries and International Intergroup Relations works hand in hand with the Department of Cultural Affairs, Libraries, Museums, the New York City Commission for the United Nations, the Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting and other entities to promote the image of New York City and enhance the relationship of its citizens with the international community.
"I have always been passionate about cultural institutions. They embody the vitality of this City, increase tourism and are an integral part of the economic engine that keeps New York the most dynamic City in the world. I am keenly aware of how essential libraries are to the every day lives of New Yorkers, and I will fight to protect the invaluable services and programs that they provide.
"I would like to thank Speaker Quinn for this amazing opportunity. I would also like to recognize Council Member Dominic Recchia for his stewardship of this committee over the last four years. I look forward to working with Speaker Quinn and Finance Chair Recchia on these issues that I know each of us cares about so deeply."
"Jimmy Van Bramer will do an outstanding job as Chair of our Cultural Affairs, Libraries and International Intergroup Relations Committee," said City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn. "For years, he served with distinction at The Queens Public Library, where he worked tirelessly to preserve after-school and English-language programs for his community. I have complete confidence that Jimmy will serve our City's library and cultural affairs programs well. He fully understands New York's cultural assets are a major reason why our City is a global destination for all New Yorkers, immigrants and tourists alike."
"I look forward to working with the Speaker and the entire City Council on expanding the roles these institutions play in our City and will work tirelessly to promote them throughout my term," said Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer.
"While it's a bittersweet moment to hand over the reigns of the Cultural Affairs Committee, I have the utmost confidence in Council Member Van Bramer," said Council Member Dominic Recchia. "He shares my passion for this City's cultural institutions. He understands their needs and their importance in the City's economy. As a member of Cultural Affairs and Chairman of the Finance Committee, I will work closely with Council Member Van Bramer to ensure our cultural institutions and libraries get the support they need."
