In People v. Guard , Bruce Robert Guard got into trouble for displaying the word "police" on a private motor vehicle.
Apparently, the doors of Guard's white pickup truck had his company's name --"GEESE POLICE" -- together with a picture of a six-pointed badge or star. A "'bubble' type" light was also attached to his truck's roof.
After a non-jury trial, the Justice Court of the Village of Suffern determined that by making his vehicle appear "official," Guard violated state law and was guilty of a traffic infraction.
On appeal, the Appellate Term, Second Department, thought the unauthorized use of the word "police" justified the outcome.
