There isn't as much trichinellosis as there used to be in the United States, but people still get it. Trichinellosis is a disease caused by a microscopic parasite, and which people can get by eating meat. In the past, most cases came from pork. Today, there is less, largely because of improvements in pork production.

But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 66 cases were reported between 2002 and 2007.

At the CDC, Susan Montgomery says meat from game animals is now the most common source. But she says infection is easy to prevent:

[Susan Montgomery speaks] ``It's still important to cook meat thoroughly, especially if that meat is from wild game, to avoid trichinellosis.''
