On February 3, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz announced during his annual State of the Borough Address at the Park Slope Armory that he will provide $1 million in capital funds to help transform the Bedford-Atlantic Armory in northern Crown Heights into a vibrant community center and another $1 million to redevelop the Sumner Avenue Armory in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

"There is absolutely no reason that the residents of Central Brooklyn--which is home to two gorgeous, massive and under-utilized armories--should not have the very same community amenities as those now available at the beautiful new Park Slope Armory," said BP Markowitz.

The Sumner Avenue Armory and the Bedford-Atlantic Armory currently serve as homeless shelters operated by the New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS). DHS has already committed $10 million in capital funding toward the renovation of the Bedford-Atlantic facility.

To facilitate the redevelopment, the BP's office will convene a community stakeholders task force to play a major role in determining which recreational and community resources will be available at the armories. The office will also be establishing a partnership with planners to work on the redevelopment plan.
