Each year, almost 800,000 Americans have a stroke. Strokes are the third leading cause of death and one of the leading causes of disability. But people can reduce their risk of stroke.

At the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Mary George says these steps include not smoking, not drinking a lot, keeping weight and eating patterns healthy, and being physically active.

She also says:

``More than 3 out of every 4 people that have a stroke have a history of high blood pressure. It's very important that people have their blood pressure checked. And if they have high blood pressure, it's important to talk to their doctor about steps to control their blood pressure.'' (14 seconds)

An article highlighting the danger of stroke was in CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
