Dear Lucas,
My warmest greetings to you for the holidays. I hope this will be a peaceful and joyous time for you, and that you start 2011 on a positive note.
The new year presents great challenges and opportunities. The City faces a $2.4 billion budget shortfall -- we will have to make difficult choices, but prudent ones that will not have a rippling negative effect. As always, I am committed to making these decisions in a well-reasoned and responsible way. On another note, I am eager to use my new chairmanship of the Council's Consumer Affairs Committee to strengthen consumer protections -- and we will start the new year with a hearing on supermarkets (half of which failed their Department of Consumer Affairs inspections) on Thursday, January 6.
There will be much more to say about these matters another day. But for now, I wish you all the best for this season and a Happy New Year.
Sincerely,
Daniel R. Garodnick
