We know what happens when Walmart comes to town.
Family owned local businesses are forced to shut their doors--and the living-wage jobs they provide vanish along with them. Within a year and half of Walmart opening in Chicago's Austin neighborhood, 82 of the area's 306 small businesses had gone out of business.
And because Walmart pays low wages and only provides health care to half of its 1.4 million associates, governments are often left to make up the difference by providing food assistance, health care and other support programs. This isn't what New York City needs.
