REMEMBER THE LADIES

white_house_project_logo_nyreblog_com_.gifIn 1776, Abigail Adams asked husband John Adams to "remember the ladies" when drafting the Declaration of Independence. It was a first flicker of the women's-movement flame, and in the 234 years since, courageous women from Susan B. Anthony to Eleanor Roosevelt, 1970s activists Bella Abzug and Gloria Steinem to Hillary Clinton, have acted as torch bearers to put women's roles front and center. This growing power and influence of women in the world is the subject of an illuminating six-part series, " Women in Social and Political Leadership ," hosted by The White House Project and Elderhostel, the not-for-profit world leader in lifelong learning during the month of May.

10am-11:30am on May 4, 6, 11, 13, 18 & 20 The White House Project National Headquarters
New York City, 434 W. 33rd St.

Registration and Class Information

The series examines dozens of influential women, including three of the last four Secretaries of State -- Clinton was preceded by Condoleezza Rice and Madeleine Albright. In 2009, the 111th Justice of the Supreme Court -- and its third woman -- was named to the bench. And women heads of state occupy office in Latin America, Africa and Asia. The growing power and influence of women in today's world is undeniable, but the fascinating series explores whether the battle for women's equality has been won; whether the struggle is history. Curriculum for the series was developed and coordinated by former Vermont Gov. Madeleine Kunin and three other influential scholars, practitioners and organizations, including: former U.S. Diplomat Janet Bogue, Dr. Beth Kelly of DePaul University; John Sears of the Franklin & Eleanor Roosevelt Institute.
