In 1776, Abigail Adams asked husband John Adams to "remember the ladies" when drafting the Declaration of Independence. It was a first flicker of the women's-movement flame, and in the 234 years since, courageous women from Susan B. Anthony to Eleanor Roosevelt, 1970s activists Bella Abzug and Gloria Steinem to Hillary Clinton, have acted as torch bearers to put women's roles front and center. This growing power and influence of women in the world is the subject of an illuminating six-part series, " Women in Social and Political Leadership ," hosted by The White House Project and Elderhostel, the not-for-profit world leader in lifelong learning during the month of May.
