Dear Friend,
Today we are starting a national grassroots campaign to enlist shareholders, consumers and American citizens to demand more accountability from our nation's corporations.
At the beginning of this year, the U.S Supreme Court issued a decision that could make our elections more corporate and less Democratic.
In its decision in Citizens United v. FEC, the Court amplified the power of corporations by giving them free reign to spend without limit or restraint in our elections.
All people suffer when money dominates politics, but investors and shareholders face a unique risk. Since the decision, my office has been working with pension funds and other institutional investors locally and across the country to demand more accountability and transparency from corporations with respect to their political spending.
Please watch this week's Advocate Podcast to learn more about our campaign and provides ways you can get involved.
You can also join our campaign by signing our letter to corporate America , which outlines a model for transparency and accountability that we believe all companies should adopt in response to the Citizens United decision.
The Supreme Court's decision has opened the door for our elections to become more about contests between corporations than between candidates. Now we need your help and support to restore values of our democratic process.
Please join us!
Thank you,
-Bill de Blasio,
Public Advocate for the City of New York
