54% Lack Confidence in U.S. Banking System
Tuesday, April 20, 2010
Just 42% of Americans express confidence in the stability of the U.S. banking system, but most aren't worried that they'll lose their own money because of a bank failure. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows that 54% lack confidence in the U.S. banking system.
Only eight percent (8%) are very confident in the stability of America's banks while 11% are not at all confident.
Before the financial industry meltdown began in the fall of 2008, 68% expressed confidence in the banking system.
In February 2009 , confidence fell to a low of 39%. Earlier this year , 42% expressed such confidence.
Thirty-two percent (32%) of Americans are at least somewhat worried about losing the money they have in the bank. However, only eight percent (8%) are very worried. That level of concern has been consistent in surveys for nearly two years.
Higher-income Americans tend to have more confidence in the banking system than those who earn less.
Fifty-one percent (51%) of investors express confidence in the banking system, compared to 34% of non-investors. Seventy-two percent (72%) of investors are not worried about losing their money, a view shared by just 53% of non-investors.
These findings come as Democrats in Congress are pushing for greater government regulation of the financial industry to prevent a repeat of the 2008 Wall Street meltdown.
Looking back, most voters still believe the bailout of the financial sector was a bad idea.
Not surprisingly, voters are far more likely to trust the judgment of political leaders who opposed the bailouts rather than those who supported the bailouts . The Political Class holds the opposite view.
Overall, 34% now favor more regulation of the U.S. financial system , while 47% are opposed.
Most voters continue to agree with Ronald Reagan's assertion that " Government is not the solution to our problems, government is the problem. "
Seventy-seven percent (77%) of adults are concerned about inflation , including 44% who are very concerned. Despite Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke's assurances that inflation is under control, just 39% are confident that that's true.
