When the State of Israel was established 62 years ago, President Harry S. Truman signed a letter proclaiming:
"This government has been informed that a Jewish State has been proclaimed in Palestine, and recognition has been requested by the provisional government thereof. The United States recognizes the provisional government and the defacto authority of the new Jewish State, The State of Israel." Today, we honor and reaffirm the relationship between the United States and Israel and the commitment between democracies around the world.
