Got this just moments ago:
Dear Lucas,
With the polls opening in about 9 hours, the runoff election for City Comptroller is too close to call. If turnout is even modest, then we will win -- if turnout is abysmally, historically low, then it is up to chance. I urge you to do your part: email friends, family and colleagues to remind them to vote tomorrow. I genuinely believe we are headed for victory -- but let's make sure of it.
The stakes for the City are high. The recession has put hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers out of work, and nearly a quarter of home mortgages are under water. We need to close a $5 billion budget gap and stave off a looming pension crisis. I don't pretend to have a magic formula that will solve these problems, but I do believe that I will use the powerful tools of the Comptroller's office creatively and thoughtfully, with honesty and integrity -- and that top-notch government can help the City come back more quickly and fairly.
Throughout this campaign, we have had to fight nearly every organized power center in City politics -- and yet we are on the brink of victory. Crossing that threshold would demonstrate the primacy of the common good over the special interests, and of substance over rhetoric. We need that now.
The pundits are saying that the campaign who gets out their voters will win this race. During this two-week runoff, our campaign has knocked on 70,000 doors and phone-banked 180,000 voters. No kidding. We have also generated several thousands of emails from supporters to their networks. Please do your part.
That grassroots spirit has fueled our campaign from the beginning, and you have been a major part of it. Please make one final effort to push us over the finish line -- click here for a sample (brief!) remember-to-vote email , and then forward it to your list.
Thank you, and I hope I'll see you at the Election Night party!
David
