Dear Friends:
New York City Democrats are fortunate to have many talented candidates running for office on Primary Day, tomorrow, September 15. A low turnout is expected, and every vote matters. I have made endorsements in the three Citywide and one Manhattan competitive primary races and hope you will consider these candidates as you cast your votes on Tuesday:
Mayor: Bill Thompson ( www.thompson2009.com ). I have had the opportunity to work with Bill on a number of issues during my time in the Assembly, including affordable housing, concessions in City parks, and school overcrowding. His experience as Comptroller for the past eight years and his previous work in education and financial services make him the right choice as the Democratic Party's candidate for Mayor this fall.
Public Advocate: Bill de Blasio ( www.billdeblasio.com ). Bill has served in the New York City Council from Brooklyn since 2001 and is the chair of its General Welfare Committee. He has worked to prevent discrimination against those seeking affordable housing and increase funding to protect at-risk children. Prior to his election to the Council, he served as Hillary Clinton's 2000 Senate campaign manager and the regional director for the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. He has been endorsed by The New York Times, Our Town, Gay City News, and the Jewish Press. Bill has been a close advisor to me during my time in the Assembly and will be a strong advocate for the interests of those who often do not have a voice when it comes to the enactment of policy in New York City.
Comptroller: David Yassky ( www.davidyassky.com ). David is a colleague and friend whose support in my highly competitive primary in my first run for the Assembly in 2002 I will always appreciate. Most recently, I worked with David to preserve and expand the tax credit for film and television production in New York State that has created numerous jobs in the City and raised significant revenue. David was elected to the Council in 2001 from Brooklyn and chairs its Small Business Committee. He has been endorsed by Senator Chuck Schumer, the New York Times, Crain's New York Business, and the League of Conservation Voters. As Comptroller, David will be able to continue his efforts to promote transparency in the New York City budget and protect our tax dollars during these challenging economic times.
Manhattan District Attorney: Richard Aborn ( www.abornforda.com ). It has been a great honor to get to know Richard over the course of this campaign. With his background as an Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan, a defense lawyer, a law firm managing partner, and nationally recognized gun control advocate who led the charge to pass the Brady Bill, there is no one better qualified than Richard for this position. He will actively prosecute crimes that affect our day-to-day lives including identity theft, financial misdeeds, and major construction safety violations. Richard, however, is also dedicated to preventing crime before it occurs by steering at-risk kids away from crime, keeping guns off our streets, and creating alternatives to incarceration for those who deserve them. Richard will preserve the tradition of the Manhattan District Attorney's office serving as the standard for prosecutors around the nation.
Thanks again for your consideration and please vote tomorrow.
