I wanted to take just a moment to share with you a clip from an interview on MSNBC today. I was asked to comment on the trip by the Libyan leader Mummar Gaddafi to the U.S., in order to attend the UN Council Meeting. As I said in the interview, it is outrageous that this individual is being allowed to travel to the U.S., rent a luxury estate, and travel freely while here for the UN meeting.
I am taking the initiative to propose a new amendment, which would restrict the travel of the leaders of state sponsors of terrorism. Muammar Gaddafi has sanctioned terrorist acts and fought to free convicted terrorist Baset al-Megrahi and these are inexcusable and unforgivable acts. As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, and as a veteran who watched my Naval Academy roommate die as a result of a terrorist act, I call on the State Department to revoke Mr. Gaddafi's privileges to travel freely. Mr. Gaddafi is a foreign head of state with access to the United Nations headquarters, but as far as I'm concerned, he should sleep in an office at the UN.
