(New York, N.Y. - Oct. 15, 2009) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will display a yard hostler with a unique hybrid technology at the World Maritime Day event in New York City this weekend. This event is co-sponsored by US Coast Guard, EPA, Department of State, Maritime Administration (MARAD) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The revolutionary EPA-patented hydraulic hybrid technology, which will be on display at the event, will soon be tested in a demonstration project within the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The hydraulic hybrid will be evaluated for use in yard hostlers, the most common work vehicle used at loading docks throughout the world. The hybrid vehicle features a series hydraulic hybrid system that can capture and reuse braking energy using a hydraulic pressure tank instead of batteries, turn off its engine when it is not needed, and operate its diesel engine at best fuel efficiency, saving fuel and reducing emissions and greenhouse gases.
The prototype vehicle will begin testing at APM Terminals at Port Elizabeth, N.J. later this year. Partners in this project include APM Terminals, Parker Hannifin, Kalmar Industries, FEV Inc., R.H. Sheppard Company, Inc., Webasto, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, and the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands, as well as EPA's Office of Air and Radiation, Office of International Affairs and Region 2 Office.
