On Thursday, October 22, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz--El Presidente del Condado de Brooklyn--will honor Rossana Rosado, publisher and CEO of El Diario/La Prensa, Cesar Perales, president and general counsel for Latino Justice PRLDF and Make the Road New York at Borough Hall's annual Latino Heritage celebration. The gathering will also provide attendees with an opportunity to donate to the family of Mario Vera, the Bushwick resident seriously injured in a recent attack being investigated as a hate crime.

Rossana Rosado has been the publisher and CEO of El Diario/La Prensa since 1999, the first woman to hold that position. She was previously a columnist and reporter for the paper, covering the Bronx and City Hall. Her experience also includes stints as the public service director at WPIX, Inc., and the vice president of public affairs at New York City's Health and Hospitals Corporation. She has won an Emmy, a STAR award from New York Women's Agenda, and the New York Press Club President's Award.

Cesar Perales, president and general counsel for Latino Justice PRLDF, was a co-founder of the Puerto Rican Legal Defense Fund in 1972, and served as its executive director. He was assistant secretary in the Department of Health and Human Services during the administration of President Jimmy Carter, and was the commissioner of the Department of Social Services under New York Governor Mario Cuomo. He also served as deputy mayor under Mayor David Dinkins. As senior vice president of Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, he received national attention for developing the Community Health Care system.

Make the Road New York (MRNY) was created two years ago through the merger of Make the Road by Walking and the Latin American Integration Center. MRNY promotes economic justice, equity and opportunity for all New Yorkers through community and electoral organizing, strategic policy advocacy, leadership development, youth and adult education and legal services.

The evening's events will be a celebration of the many faces of Brooklyn's Latino community, featuring music from Grupo Folkorico "Raices de Mexico" and food representative of many nations. One out of every five Brooklynites can trace their roots to a Spanish-speaking country, and Borough President Markowitz is proud to celebrate the contributions of this vibrant community.
