Fifty-nine percent (59%) of adults say they are washing their hands more since the swine flu outbreak was announced, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Thirty-seven percent (37%) are not.
Sixty-nine percent (69%) of women say they are washing their hands more, compared to 48% of men.
But just 21%of Americans say schools should be closed until the swine flu outbreak subsides. Sixty-seven percent (67%) say there is no need for school closings.
Seventy percent (70%) of adults with children at home say the schools should not be closed versus 65% of those who do not have children living with them.
Only 32% are hanging around the house more these days to reduce the risk of getting sick. Two-thirds (67%) are not staying home more.
Despite frequent images in the news media of people in other countries wearing masks, only 5% of Americans say they are wearing one when they go out in public.
Only eight percent (8%) say they have cancelled any travel plans as a result of the swine flu outbreak. Eighty-eight percent (88%) say they are traveling as usual.
Sixty-five percent (65%) of U.S. voters said in a survey last week that they were personally concerned about the threat of swine flu, including 20% who said they were Very Concerned.
Sixty-one percent (61%) also believed the media makes the outbreak of diseases like swine flu seem worse than they really are.
Generally speaking, those who earn less than $40,000 per year are more likely to stay home to prevent getting sick than are those who earn more annually.
Americans' confidence that doctors in their community are adequately prepared for a flu epidemic has remained largely unchanged over the past two years . Just 37% are confident local doctors are prepared. Sixty-three percent also think the border with Mexico, where the swine flu originated, should be closed for now.
