Local Brooklyn Jeweler Offers Free Heart Necklaces to Deserving Moms

May 8, 2009 (Brooklyn, New York) - Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz is teaming up with longtime Brooklyn jeweler, The Yellow Door, Ltd, to help bring joy this upcoming Mother's Day to people who are struggling due to the loss of a job or their home.  On Friday, May 8, beginning at 10:30 am, Borough President Markowitz will be honorary Yellow Door "salesman," and will be handing out free sterling silver heart-shaped necklaces to 100 deserving individuals--free, with no strings attached.

"We are well aware of the state of the economy," says Luna Bijou Zemmol, CEO of The Yellow Door, Ltd, a jewelry and gift retail business which her family has operated in Brooklyn since 1966.  "And if there's something we can do to help a family who's going through some tough times by helping them show their love with a beautiful Mother's Day gift, we're all for it."

Free sterling silver necklaces--gift wrapped in The Yellow Door gift box and valued at over $100 each--are being given away to individuals who have lost their job or home.  "Losing your job or your home is a traumatic experience, and the Borough President's office is happy to team up with The Yellow Door to extend our hands and say we understand and hope this helps," states Marty Markowitz, Brooklyn Borough President.  "Mother's Day is an important holiday--and we want people to be able to express their appreciation, despite financial troubles they may be experiencing," continues President Markowitz.

About The Yellow Door, Ltd.

The Yellow Door, Ltd., 1308 Avenue M in Brooklyn has been providing discriminating customers with the most fashion-forward jewelry and gifts in the tri-state area.  When the Yellow Door first opened in 1966, the founders had a simple mission, which continues to guide the store today.  Each product had to be unusual, elegant and well-priced--and customer service was to be priority number one.  While this mission continues, over the years, the stores expanded dramatically and the original 600 square foot store now encompasses over 6,000 square feet of retail space.  The Yellow Door is still a family run business and is now managed by the founder Sallee Bijou's daughter, Luna Bijou Zemmol and her husband, Jonathan I. Zemmol.
