Dear Ansonia Independent Democratic Club Member,

As you know, I was the City's first Public Advocate, the #2 citywide official -- your "ombudsman" and watchdog over City Hall.  This year I'm seeking to be your Public Advocate again, because I am devoted to serving the city that welcomed my immigrant grandparents a century ago and is now welcoming my two children as they begin their careers.  And since their futures and ours are at risk during this deepening economic crisis, now is no time to sit on the sidelines.

While anyone can tell you what they would do, I can tell you what I have done to save your money and your health and to actually make progressive change happen.  My work as your first  Public Advocate included:

  • Releasing a major study showing that the NYPD rarely disciplined police misconduct and successfully suing the Commissioner to obtain NYPD files -- effectively tripling the rate of discipline for police misconduct.
  • Enacting a law prohibiting discrimination against domestic violence victims in the workplace.
  • Exposing how hospitals are routinely and illegally violating the law restricting working hours in, For Whom the "Bell" Tolls:  How Hospitals Violate the "Bell" Regulations Governing Resident Working Conditions.

I have won a lot of fights for all the families, seniors and workers who don't have big lobbyists and powerful friends (see more at markgreen.com ).

Being an effective Public Advocate requires a fresh approach to policy that will ensure that New York remains a city in which vibrant job growth provides opportunities to ALL its citizens and continues to attract talent from around the world.   In my work-as a public interest lawyer, your Consumer Affairs Commissioner, your Public Advocate, a college teacher, an author, and as the president of Air America Radio here in the City-I have always focused on innovative ideas that lead to real results for average families.
New York is the greatest city in the world and it is our challenge is to make sure that it remains so for generations to come.  I'd be so grateful if you'd again consider letting me serve you.

Sincerely,
Mark Green
