Release from Teddy's Bar & Grill:
On Thursday, June 4, for the occasion of "Brooklyn Day," Teddy's Bar & Grill, at the corner of N. 8th & Berry Streets in Williamsburg, will celebrate one of Brooklyn's greatest and most famous assets: community. There will be a night of fun, music and appreciation for the struggle of neighbors to build and improve their neighborhood. Teddy's is Brooklyn's oldest continuously operating tavern and a member of the 100 Club of century-old shops still thriving. Borough President Marty Markowitz, aka "Mr. Brooklyn," is the invited guest of honor. Council Member David Yassky is also expected to attend. Local Brooklyn heroes will be honored for outstanding service in fighting for affordable housing at the Town Hall Community Center in Northside.
Festivities begin at 7pm, with "DJ D" spinning the sounds of Brooklyn-born recording artists. All Brooklyn, all Night! Valuable local organizing efforts will be saluted as community organizers are appreciated for their successful work in saving local tenants from eviction and advocating for affordable housing. A music I.Q. test will be administered as "DJ D" hosts Brooklyn Bingo. As Teddy's was its first customer, local brewing favorite, Brooklyn Brewery, will distribute promotional items throughout the night. Famed Brooklyn recording artist Strafe ("Set It Off") will make a guest D.J. turn.
Fundraising for neighborhood causes continues with a drawing for the monthly rent party. Half of the cash pot goes to the winner and the rest to build the new Northside Town Hall at the legendary building on Wythe Avenue, known as the "People's Firehouse," and once home to Fire Engine Co. 212. Brooklyn Brewery has also donated Yankees vs. Mets tickets to be won during the evening.
Teddy's Bar & Grill has been a popular fixture in the community since it was built in 1887 and franchised by the pre-prohibition brewery, Peter Doelger. Mae West, Doelger's niece, once resided in an upstairs apartment. Teddy's was an important political center, a meeting spot of Brooklyn's own Tammany Hall. Teddy's has hosted scores of entertainment acts since the emergence of Williamsburg as a Brooklyn hot spot, including Joan Osborne, The Shorty Jackson Band, The Stray Cats, The Sugarman 3, George Kilby Jr., Cassandra Wilson and Joel Forrester, as well as a weekly tap-jazz jam that featured the terrific Brooklyn R&B singer, Yvette Glover.
