Support Middle School Students of NYC in need by spending 8 hours per month simply being their friend in school and out of school.
Community-based:
The foundation of our program for a century, this program matches low-income youth, often from single-parent homes, with a carefully screened adult role model 21 years or older. "Bigs", who have completed "Skills to Mentor Youth" volunteer training, meet with youngsters at least every other week, for four hours and maintain regular phone contact. One-on-One activities with your Little Brother or Sister include seeing a ball game, playing frisbee in the park, helping with homework, or checking out a restaurant you've been meaning to visit. Any one of these activities will help build a friendship and the child's confidence to succeed.
School-based:
The school-based mentoring program meets weekly during the school lunch time or breakfast hour; the program is designed to allow students to meet with an adult mentor with the goal of building skills and developing lasting friendships. In this structured program, volunteers are matched with elementary or middle school students. Our professional staff carefully screens and trains each volunteer who wishes to be a mentor. After the interview process, adult volunteers are matched with a student for a one-to-one mentoring relationship. Volunteer must be 18 years and older.
Come be a mentor to 1 of the many middle school students!
All volunteers must have resided in the tri-state area New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey for 6 months or longer and be able to commit to 1 year as a mentor.
