BP MARKOWITZ ON CONEY ISLAND PLAN APPROVED BY CITY COUNCIL LAND USE AND ZONING COMMITTEES: APPLAUDS ADDITION OF HIS AFFORDABLE HOUSING, UNION LABOR AND PS 188 GYMNASIUM RECOMMENDATIONS
"Throughout this process, I have insisted that any Coney Island Plan 'build with Coney, by Coney and for Coney,' and the inclusion of three of my recommendations--the use of union labor paid with prevailing wages, no less than 35 percent affordable housing in the Coney West and Coney North districts, and a new community gymnasium at PS 188--are all victories for Brooklyn. As we move forward, it is my hope the final Coney Island Plan will include these and other recommendations I and others have called for, including a larger amusement area that remains unique, creative and iconic in its architecture, signage, lighting and preservation of appropriate buildings and amusements. I am confident that with these changes and others, Coney Island's bright future as a year-round, affordable playground for the 21st century will be ensured."
