STATEMENT FROM GOVERNOR PATERSON ON THE SELECTION OF DR. DAVID M. STEINER TO SERVE AS COMMISSIONER OF EDUCATION

PR- 344-09
July 27, 2009

Statement of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg:
"It's my pleasure to congratulate Dr. David Steiner on being elected by the New York State Board of Regents as the State Education Commissioner and President of the State University of New York. Through his much-heralded leadership at Hunter College's School of Education, he has helped improve teacher quality in New York State, enhanced special education programs and programs for immigrant children, and strengthened the training of principals and other school leaders. We look forward to working closely with the incoming Commissioner to raise educational standards and close the achievement gap between minority students and their white counterparts in New York City and statewide. There are few positions in public service that present such a tremendous opportunity to positively and permanently affect the lives of so many children. Commissioner Steiner now has one of these jobs, and I look forward to supporting him in whatever way I can."
Statement of Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein:
"David Steiner is a world-class educator and leader. He has been a strong partner to the New York City school system during the last several years and his commitment to public education is deep, informed, and insightful. He understands the importance of teacher preparation, the use of technology to enhance the instructional mission, and the importance of holding everyone accountable for student achievement. The Regents chose wisely and they deserve the gratitude of the entire State.
