AN UGLY BETTY PANEL

The New York City Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting  will be sponsoring a panel presentation on "The Art and Design of 'Ugly Betty,'" on Wednesday, January 28, 2009, at 6 PM.

Here are the particulars:

January 6, 2009 - On Wednesday, January 28, 2009, the Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting will present The Art and Design of "Ugly Betty" - a panel featuring the creative design team behind the award-winning ABC hit series. The panel is free, open to the public, and will take place at The Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan.

Based on "Yo Soy Betty La Fea," the groundbreaking Columbian telenovela that became an international phenomenon, "Ugly Betty" tells the story of Betty Suarez (America Ferrera), a sweet, intelligent and hardworking girl from Queens who tries to make it in the cutthroat world of a high class fashion magazine. Currently in its third season, the ABC Studios' "Made in NY" series shoots on location throughout the five boroughs and at its production home, Silvercup Studios.

Each episode of "Ugly Betty" relies on an artistic team of skilled designers who are called on each week to create outrageous designs, innovative sets, and novel magazine layouts. The Art and Design of "Ugly Betty" will provide students and interested New Yorkers with first hand accounts about what it's like to work in a creative position for a hit TV show based in New York, utilizing skills traditionally associated with other jobs like graphic artist or fashion designer. Panelists will also share their career advice with the audience on how best to get started in the City's thriving production industry.

Commissioner Katherine Oliver will moderate the panel, which will include a Q&A session. Panelists for The Art and Design of "Ugly Betty" include:

SILVIO HORTA - Executive Producer/Creator

PATRICIA FIELD - Costume Designer

MOLLY ROGERS - Associate Costume Designer

MARK WORTHINGTON - Production Designer

ROBERT BERNARD - Graphics Designer

RICH DEVINE - Set Decorator

"New York City is home to a thriving production industry, employing 100,000 New Yorkers and generating $5 billion to our economy each year," Katherine Oliver, Commissioner of the Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting said. "Our office is committed to attracting new production business and creating new jobs through the 'Made in NY' program. At the same time, we are working to ensure that a diverse group of New Yorkers have access to these positions through programs such as this panel and our 'Made in NY' Production Assistant Training Program - a series of free, full-time, month-long training programs developed with Brooklyn Workforce Innovations. We've also launched a new PSA campaign thanking New Yorkers for hosting production throughout the five boroughs." For more information about these programs, visit  http://www.nyc.gov/film .

The panel begins at 6 pm. Doors open at 5:30pm. Seating is limited and available on a first come, first served basis. RSVP to  rsvp@film.nyc.gov by Monday, January 26.
