About The Council of Urban Professionals
The Council of Urban Professionals (CUP) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit membership organization representing and advocating for the social, political and economic interests of urban professionals and their communities.
In the past year, CUP has worked to engage urban professionals to help increase the number of low‐income students of color who graduate from college and are prepared to participate meaningfully in our economy and society; to grow the numbers of minorities and women serving on nonprofit, public sector and corporate boards; to gain access to capital for minority owned and led enterprises; and to raise the participation of urban communities and their leaders in the electoral process.
Our Agenda
Empowering Next Generation Leaders
The CUP Fellows Program is dedicated to training and developing minority political and civic leaders. We believe that by connecting Fellows with public policy experts and civic leaders, and building a supportive network of mentors and stakeholders, we will empower next generation leaders of color and enhance minority representation in public leadership and policy-making positions across New York.
Promoting Board Diversity
Diversification of boards is in the best interest of nonprofit and public sector institutions by creating an environment more aligned to the communities being served, stimulating dialogue and innovation, and expanding networks and understanding of one's audience. CUP believes there is an opportunity to not only place highly motivated and qualified candidates on to boards, but also to provide boards with new perspective and skills.
Access to Capital and Opportunity
CUP believes that creating and expanding minority business opportunities through government and corporate diversity programs is critical to the growth and vitality of our economy. It will result in a more competitive economic environment as well as stronger communities.
Innovative Education Reform
CUP supports bold, innovative education reform measures that focus on raising academic standards and closing the achievement gap. These include development of charter schools and pay-for-performance initiatives, like CUP's Rewarding Achievement (REACH) program. Through these initiatives, CUP works to provide the tools necessary for high level performance of low-income and minority high school students during their college careers.
The Distinguished Leadership Series
The Distinguished Leadership Series (DLS) is CUP's public affairs forum presenting 15-20 annual events on topics ranging across politics, the economy, culture and society. CUP members and new member targets are invited to participate in one to two events per month to network and engage in active dialogue with local and national leaders.
