GOVERNOR PATERSON GOES HOLIDAY SHOPPING FOR FAMILIES IN NEED
Joins RWDSU President Stuart Appelbaum at SYMS to Purchase Holiday Gifts
Thanks Retail Workers for Hard Work During the Holidays
Yesterday, Governor David A. Paterson was joined by Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) President Stuart Appelbaum at SYMS Department Store as he purchased gifts that will be donated to families in need. The Governor purchased two children's snow suits, two hats, two pairs of gloves and a scarf for a family to keep warm during the winter months. Governor Paterson highlighted the importance of giving back during the holiday season and throughout the year; he will donate the gifts at the Staten Island CYO Christmas dinner for needy families on Christmas Day. Governor Paterson also thanked New York's countless retail workers for their hard work and dedication during this difficult holiday season to keep our economy moving.
"During this holiday season, and especially as we are in the midst of an economic downturn, every little bit helps individuals and families who are most in need. It is the least we can do to bring a little holiday cheer into our communities," Governor Paterson said. "I'd like to thank RWDSU and the countless retail workers in New York City and State for their hard work to keep our economy going during these difficult times. On behalf of my family and all New Yorkers, I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season."
Governor Paterson will also give back during the holiday season by volunteering at City Hall Restaurant's holiday lunch for needy families on Christmas Eve, and by attending both the National Action Network's Christmas Celebration in Harlem and the Staten Island CYO Christmas dinner for needy families on Christmas Day.
Stuart Appelbaum, President of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU, UFCW), said: "Retail workers have it especially tough during the holiday season working long hours under tremendous stress and pressure. We appreciate Governor Paterson taking the time to recognize their enormous contributions to our city and State economy as we celebrate the season."
Frank Bail, President of the RWDSU Local 1102 and representing SYMS Department Store workers, said: "I am pleased that Governor Paterson is here with us today at SYMS, a store that has been part of the fabric of New York City for nearly 50 years. The members of RWDSU Local 1102 who work at SYMS are proud of the part they play in making SYMS such a great shopping experience."
