YETTA KURLAND DENOUNCES SHIPPING OF HOMELESS OUT OF CITY -- CHALLENGES BLOOMBERG-QUINN POLICY AS INSENSITIVE
'The disdain that this administration shows for homeless people is yet another reason to vote new leadership into City Hall'
New York , NY. August 3, 2009. Yetta Kurland, who is running to be the next City Council Member in the 3rd District, today denounced the policy of shipping homeless people out of New York City.
Yetta Kurland is running against Council Member Christine Quinn, whom Kurland faults with being too closely aligned with Mayor Bloomberg and not responsive to community needs.
"These individuals are already exiles, and this policy only underscores the administration's lack of respect towards homeless issues and its inability to understand and therefore solve this City's severe housing problems.
"In June of 2004, Mayor Bloomberg announced his plan to reduce homelessness in New York City by two-thirds within five years.
"On July 2, 2009, Bloomberg stated at a public forum that the reason for his utter failure to do so was because he's made shelters 'more attractive.
"On July 14th I attended a forum presented by Picture the Homeless, entitled 'Time's Up,' to address Bloomberg's failed five year plan. The current administration did not attend and did not respond to these findings.
"This week Bloomberg suggested that the solution to our growing and serious problem with homelessness in this City would be to ship homeless people out of New York City.
"This administration doesn't want to solve New York 's problems with homelessness. It just wants to get rid of the homeless people." Said Kurland who feels that many problems of homelessness are made worse by the overdevelopment of luxury buildings and the related loss of affordable housing during the Bloomberg-Quinn administration.
"We do not have the luxury of another 4 years of this type of insensitivity. We must make sure that all New Yorkers get out to vote for local change in New York City in the September 15th Democratic Primary."
