In Matter of Nan Ff. , an adult asked the Otsego County Family Court to unseal her adoption records. When her request was denied, an appeal to the Appellate Division, Third Department, followed.
According to the AD3, a state statute -- the Domestic Relations Law -- permits the unsealing of adoption records for "good cause." And while a "medical need" may suffice, a licensed physician has to certify the request.
Since Nan didn't submit the required documentation, her records remained off limits.
The AD3 made no secret of its sentiments there.
