BROOKLYN LIT MATCH?

martymark.jpgBP MARKOWITZ ANNOUNCES FOURTH ANNUAL "BROOKLYN LIT MATCH" TEEN WRITING CONTEST

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz invites Brooklyn high school students ages 14-19 to submit stories, poems, essays, spoken word and raps for the fourth annual "Brooklyn Lit Match" teen writing contest, a competition held in conjunction with the Brooklyn Book Festival. The winning submissions will be published in a book and the first place winner will receive a laptop computer.

The theme of this year's contest is Brooklyn Next. Students are asked to write on the following:

Change, change, change. It's everywhere, all the time. A traffic light changes a thousand times a day; neighborhoods are transformed; or the course of history is reset by a single moment, a movement of people, or a new discovery in science. Change is in the details of everyday life in Brooklyn or in the broad sweep of time. Change can be exciting, frightening, for better or worse, or just different. What story--true or fiction--can you tell about change that you experienced or dream about in Brooklyn

A committee of publishers, editors and literary agents will select 10 finalists, including a first place winner. The 10 finalists will be invited to read their work at the Brooklyn Book Festival on September 13, 2009. Their work will be professionally edited and published in an anthology to be released by Akashic Books. The first place winner will be announced at the Book Festival and receive a laptop computer.

Entries are due by June 20, 2009, can be typed or handwritten, and should not exceed 2,500 words. You can write in any form: a story, poem, essay, or rap. Please include a cover sheet with your name, address, school, age and telephone number. There is no fee to enter, and you must be a resident of Brooklyn at the time of submission.

Entries should be sent to Brooklyn Book Festival Lit Match, Brooklyn Borough Hall, 209 Joralemon Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201. Any questions regarding the contest can be directed to Liz Koch, 718-802-3852 or ekoch@brooklynbp.nyc.gov .
