If you're a foodie like me, you're probably a sucker for a good recipe or restaurant review.
But these days, it seems there are slim pickings when it comes to the cooking biz.
Over the New Year holiday, I came across an inane " puff piece " in a national magazine ( which will remain nameless ).
In the January/February 2008 edition of that particular rag , you'll find a "spread" on Russ & Daughters -- the "Louvre of Lox" -- located at 179 East Houston Street, the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
Since I'm always in search of a good nosh, I studiously read the piece only to find that it was a total waste of ink and paper.
Just in case you were wondering, in order to make a lox, bagel and cream cheese sandwich ... you'll need to start with lox, bagels and cream cheese.
Slice the bagels in half, slap on the cream cheese and lox, reunite the bagel halves, and consume.
That's it. (Wish I could get paid for writing dreck like that.)
But then again, when the top two recipes downloaded from the Food Network 's website are both versions of "macaroni and cheese," that, my friends, speaks volumes about the state of the American palette.

Now, can someone tell us how to make a decent peanut butter and jelly sandwich?
