"I'LL BUY YOU A PARAKEET."

I was attending a political fundraiser the other night, when a reader approached me and asked if I had seen Paris Hilton's interview on the Late Show with David Letterman .

"You gotta take a look," the young lady insisted. "It's hilarious."

Hilarious? Not quite.

Interesting social commentary? Maybe.

We all know the routine. People appearing on talk shows can expect to be grilled about their lurid pasts.

If you're Paris Whitney Hilton , you can bet you're going to be asked about former friend and co-star, Nicole Richie , and the young ladies' respective jail stints. (After all, what else is there to talk about when it comes to those two?  Porn?)

So, if you would like to see Paris squirm as Letterman insists on asking her questions about her time in the slammer, then you need to see the segment which aired on September 28, 2007. Rather than react with "style and grace," or come off as a trouper, the little diva seems like she was on the verge of a meltdown.

"LEAVE PARIS ALONE!"

Absolutely not!

The 26-year old was looking for free publicity to hawk some new fragrance that bears her name, so the grilling came with the turf.

Yeh, Letterman was a bit harsh harping on the arrest and incarceration. And, he seemed to relish making her uncomfortable. But that's his shtick.

And, interestingly enough, he had a point. This was an opportunity for the woman to serve as a role model for others. An opportunity to make a real difference in young people's lives.

But Paris was having none of that. She was there to sell; to push products. She wanted to talk about her fragrance and movie.

It's time for the woman to "reinvent" herself.

Her "cutesy" vacuousness is getting old, fast.
