WHAT'S UP WITH MICHAEL JACKSON?

Last week, while I was stranded in  Liberty International Airport  waiting for a delayed flight to depart, I had loads of time to thumb through a few magazines.

EBONY 's December 2007 issue, which prominently features the "king of pop," Michael Jackson , right on its front cover, immediately caught my eye.

In that magazine, you'll find an extensive article on the aging, androgynous, and ethereal performer. (It's supposedly his first in-depth interview with a U.S. publication in a decade.)

So, what's the latest poop on Jackson ?  Well, here's a quick overview:

Is he secretly married to his nanny?

No

Has he fled to the Middle East?

No

Is he hooked on alcohol and painkillers?

No

Does he have a new album in the works?

Maybe

Is a "world tour" with sister Janet, planned?

Maybe

While you won't find anything earth-shattering or newsworthy, something did strike me as bizarre.

Right at the end of the interview, Jackson recounts a post-performance encounter with a young child and is quoted as stating as follows:

I remember doing the performance so clearly, and I remembered that I was so upset with myself, 'cause it wasn't what I wanted. I wanted it to be more. But not until I finished. It was a little child, a little Jewish child backstage with a little tuxedo on, he looked at me, and he said [in a stunned voice] 'Who taught you to move like that?' [Laughter] And I said, 'I guess God ... and rehearsal.'

Huh?

Who taught Jackson to think like that? And, why was there a need to describe the child in that manner?

Wouldn't the story have been as interesting (or compelling) if he had omitted the reference to the kid's perceived ethnicity or religious belief?

Sorry, but I thought THAT was pretty creepy.

Hiss!
