LIGHT SENTENCE FOR SENDING HEAVY EQUIPMENT TO IRAN?

SENIOR GETS 24 MONTHS IN PRISON

JH (60) of Sterling, Virginia was sentenced in mid-January to 24 months in prison (together with three years of supervised release) for unlawfully exporting heavy equipment from the U.S. to Iran.

Contrary to federal law, and despite trade sanctions, JH shipped items such as bobcats and wheel loaders, to Iran via the UAE. And even though he was advised by a Special Agent with the Bureau of Industry and Security that such conduct was impermissible, JH continued the unlawful activity.

According to a written statement, Assistant Attorney General Matthew G. Olsen of the Justice Department’s National Security Division noted that “Mr. [JH] illegally shipped industrial equipment to the Iranian regime, smuggled restricted goods through the UAE to Iran, and caused a shipping company to submit false information to the U.S. government. He has been held to account for his crimes …. As this case shows, the Justice Department remains committed to enforcing U.S. sanctions and export control laws to deny Iran the commodities that fuel its malign activities abroad and threaten our nation’s security.”

That sentence didn’t strike us as heavy, at all.
