HOUSTON INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT ENGAGED IN SEX DISCRIMINATION?

PAID FEMALE WORKER PAID LESS THAN MALE COUNTERPART

In 2019, the Houston Independent School District (HISD) allegedly paid a male Career & Technical Education (CTE) program specialist more than a female counterpart for a “job requiring substantially equal skill, effort and responsibility and performed under similar working conditions.”

Believing that such conduct violated the Equal Pay Act of 1963, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) filed a lawsuit, EEOC v. Houston Independent School District, Civil Action No. 4:24-cv-00125, in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas in Houston, seeking monetary damages and injunctive relief.

In a written statement, EEOC District Director Rayford Irvin noted that “The EEOC is fully and absolutely committed to ensuring that gender is not factored into compensation and that employees receive equal pay for equal work.”

No compensating for that?
